It's meant to have the load pulling perpendicular to those slots, so having it run widthwise in your bed doesn't make much sense. What about welding up a rectangle of e track that would fit inside your bed and bolt it down at 10 or 12 points. Or do the same but weld 1/8"x5" to the bottom and have a removable etrack rectangle.

Amazon.com provided the shoring clips for the e-track. Its designed to have 2x4 or 2x6 boards nestled in them to keep your cargo from sliding around in a trailer.
