A Note About Scuba Diving. One important thing to keep in mind about Grüner See is that water activity is strictly prohibited. In 2016, Austria banned scuba diving, boating, and dogs from entering the lake. Before this time, scuba diving was one of the main reasons why people visited the lake. However, Tragoess residents were afraid that algae.

Austria?!?! We spent two days diving Grüner See (Green Lake) in the Styria. This lake is formed in the summer months when the snow melts from the mountains and collectes there. There is enough water (up to 10m) around May-June when it becomes a bizarre attraction for keen divers. Unfortunately, diving here has been prohibited since Januray 2016.

Grüner See is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of 12 meters. During the winter months, the lake measures just 1-2 meters deep, but as the snow on the surrounding mountains melts, the basin that contains the lake begins to flood. Between mid-May and June, the Grüner See reaches depths of up to 12 meters, submerging the adjacent parkland.
