Remembering Seaboard Air Line Trains

The Seaboard Air Line Railway traced its corporate ancestry to the Seaboard Inland Air Line, which was created through an informal agreement in the decade after the Civil War between the Seaboard & Roanoke Railroad (S&R), operating from Portsmouth, Va., to Weldon, and the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad (R&G), extending from Weldon to Raleigh..

Seaboard Air Line Railroad Streamliners to the Palms. 1939 Owing to the phenomenal public enthusiasm for the new Silver Meteor, inaugurated Feb. 2, 1939 as Florida's first streamliner, S.A.L. ordered seven 2,000-hp E4 diesel locomotives (#3007-3013). This allowed expanding the single-trainset every-third-day schedule to daily operation.

According to Larry Goolsby's book, " Seaboard Air Line Passenger Service, In The Streamlined Era " the train was the previously unnamed #17 (southbound) and #18 (northbound). Despite its short routing the Tidewater provided connections and through cars across much of the Seaboard's system.

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad 's Main Line was the backbone of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad 's network in the southeastern United States. The main line ran from Richmond, Virginia to Tampa, Florida, a distance of over 800 miles. Along its route it passed through Petersburg, Raleigh, Columbia, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Ocala, Florida.

Seaboard Air Line #544: The locomotive was built by the American Locomotive Company in March 1918.This 2-10-0 Decapod was built for the Russian State Railroad, but never delivered due to the Revolution of 1917. Before the locomotive could be used in the U.S, wider tires had to be installed since the Russian Railroads used 5-foot gauge, instead of 4 feet 8 ยฝ inches.

Seaboard & Western Airlines was founded by the Norden brothers, Arthur and Raymond โ€”both World War II veterans of the Army's Air Transport Command, on September 11, 1946. Raymond, who had dreamed of starting an airline while still a teenager, became, at age 28, the company's first President.
