Back Merc Bundle Hearthstone
Several Hearthstone players who've been inactive for quite a while have reportedly received a bundle of card packs for free upon logging in to Battle.net. Some players received 150 card packs while others received just 20 free packs as a "welcome back gift" from Blizzard. The free card packs are apparently part of a marketing test being run by Blizzard.

Was sitting in the Blizzard launcher after exiting WoW just now and the little yellow package icon appeared saying I had a new gift, a 150 free card pack welcome back gift for HS. Sure enough, there's 75 Standard and 75 Castle Nathria packs. That was a bit of a surprise, but now I have that going for me which is nice.

The price is $19.99. The bundle contains 40 card packs and two legendaries. The packs include: 20 card packs "which can include cards from Festival of Legends" -- not sure what they mean by "can include." it doesn't say "definitely include" or "will include" 10 card packs which can include card packs from March of the Lich King 10 card packs.

I think I got the maximum number of free packs last time (150 sounds right) and just got 80 this time. Last time we were speculating that it was a marketing experiment to see how people reacted to various levels of gift and whether they subsequently spent money on the game.

Apparently people who spent money on the game are the only ones getting free packs. Obviously without purpose. Blizzard caters to the people who spend money, because they know they probably will again. I've purchased a couple of the Adventures back in the day, but haven't purchased packs.

As for why some players received different amounts of free packs, Blizzard's spokesperson said, "It's entirely random. Relevant players are randomly sorted into various buckets and assigned a corresponding offer, in this case a number of card packs. " The minimum is 20 packs, and the maximum is 150 packs. Bringing back the frozen throne for free is a great move for example. Adding even more money sink cards to the next set than normal (if I'm reading it right, I've not kept up too much so far and tend not to bother until they release) is not a great move. It's about player retention as much as it is luring back returning players.
