Gaius was Merlin's mentor and guardian throughout the series, and as such they shared a very close and familial relationship. They quickly came to view one another as father and son and maintained a very close bond even after Merlin met his real father, Balinor, in the series 2 finale. In the Merlin documentary series Secrets & Magic, Richard Wilson stated that Gaius was Hunith's elder brother.

Gauis bloodshot eyes in season 5 finally explained! SPOILERS In Season 5 Episode 5 Gauis appears to be sick as one of his eyes is extremely red and looks quite funny. The first few times I watched this show I assumed that maybe the actor was genuinely having health issues or something of the likes.

What happened to Gaius? I don't think this is a spoiler but beware anyways since it's from season 5. What just happened with Gaius in season 5? He went from this extremely intelligent old man who notices anything out of the ordinary to one who ignores the majority of suspicious acts and activities.
