Peugeot cars A to Z of classic cars. 2-door 2+2 seater coupé/2-seater cabriolet. Compared with dull saloons, these were rather sweet and sporty derivatives. Little faster than saloons (engines were not tuned but frontal area was down), and front-drive handling was slightly better. Very limited sales in UK, and few good ones now remain.

In this country the coupé version of the Peugeot 204 (which has the same engine and servo disc-front brakes as the saloon and estate-bodied models) is expensive—1,327 8s. 7d., inclusive of p.t.—but it is a rugged, very comfortable, refined little car, a typical product of Peugeot, three times in succession winner of the E. The 204 sedan arrived in 1965. One year later, the Coupe and Cabriolet appeared, on a shortened wheelbase. All of the 204s were powered by the same smooth 1103 cc transverse SOHC four, rated at 53 hp through 1968, and 55 hp for 1969-1970, before it was replaced by the 304 Coupe and Cabriolet, which was just an evolution of the 204.

The 204 was launched in the spring of 1965. Its sole engine was an all-alloy 1100cc 4-cyl. sitting atop a 4-speed all-synchronized gearbox and placed transversally, like the BMC Mini, to drive the front wheels. The interior was Spartan and the options list virtually inexistent, but for the traditional sunroof.

The 204 looked like a Peugeot and did not look anywhere near as radical as the technology under the skin. It debuted as a sedan in April of 1965, with other styles following. The wagon (er, Break ) debuted that autumn, with the shorter Coupe and Convertible following in the spring of 1966, finally capped by a two-door van variant ( fourgonnette ).
