SDKFZ 234/4 Armored Car Photos
The Sd.Kfz. 234 ( Sonderkraftfahrzeug 234, Special Purpose Vehicle 234 ), was a family of armoured cars designed and built in Germany during World War II. The vehicles were lightly armoured, armed with a 20, 50 or 75 mm main gun, and powered by a Tatra V12 diesel engine.

The Sd.Kfz.234/4 was a final attempt to provide troops with mobile anti-tank gun in an attempt to improve the desperate war Situation in December of 1944. Sd.Kfz.234/4 was based on Sd.Kfz.234/3 with modified superstructure and armed with 75mm Pak 40 L/46 anti-tank gun with limited traverse and elevation. Only 36 rounds of ammunition were stored.

The inside of the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 was crammed enough without an extra, redundant steering wheel and seat in the middle of the fighting compartment, so this would make some sense. On the other hand, the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 in the Patton Museum definitely has a rear driving station. As the /4 replaced the /3 on the production line somewhat hurriedly.

The Sd.Kfz. 234/2's 50 mm gun could penetrate and knock out Allied armoured cars and light tanks, but this was not the vehicle's role. The role intended was for the car's armour to protect the crew from small arms fire during reconnaissance missions.

The Sd.Kfz.234/4 (Gerät 96) The "Pak-Wagen" or tank hunter variant, open-topped with a 7.5 cm (2.95 in) PaK 40 L/46. 89 were apparently built between December 1944 and March 1945.

Although it's probably best known for its faults, 51 years on I decided to have a go at a demo build of what has always been one of my favourite Airfix armour models.

From the limited photos available so far, the factory-applied 3-colour scheme used on the Sd.Kfz.234/4 would appear quite uniform. Closer examination though reveals some slight differences, particularly on the right fender above the second wheel and on the gun shield.
