History of the Island Street Boatyard Lighthouse. Posted/Updated by Bryan Penberthy on 2015-02-07. The Island Street Boatyard was a dream of Tim Belstadt, a retired Wilson Greatbatch executive and resident of North Tonawanda. The plan was to turn five acres of property along River Road in North Tonawanda into a turn-of-the-century style complex.

Griffith Island precinct offered us a great trail one going up to the end of the pier and another turning off somewhere halfway and extending to the light house. We did both the trails with real fun seeing interesting bird species on the way. Views of the ocean from the pier and lighthouse precinct were both attractive.

The Griffiths Island Lighthouse and a Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage were built in 1859 by Scottish stonemasons out of bluestone. The unique stairway of the lighthouse was cut with each step being inserted in the next course of stone in the outside wall.
